About Goring & Streatley Probus Club
Goring & Streatley Probus Club was formed in 1976. It is a non-political, non-sectarian club for retired professional and business men, deriving its name from the first three letters of each: pro bus.
The Probus movement has existed in its present form since the early 1970s. The number of clubs has increased steadily and they are now to be found throughout Britain and beyond, mainly but not exclusively in the English-speaking world. There is no central or organising body and each Club conforms to its members' wishes.
The object of the club is to promote good fellowship by arranging regular meetings of members and such other activities as the committee considers appropriate. From time to time outings, lunches and other social activities are arranged which members are expected to support whenever possible.
Membership of the club is open to retired or partly retired professional and businessmen residing in the Goring-on-Thames/Streatley area. The number of ordinary members is set at 75. The Committee encourages applicants at the younger end of the retirement age bracket with a view to maintaining a balance in the average age of our members.
Regular meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month. The meetings include a talk by either a club member or a guest speaker. The aim is for talks to cover a variety of topics likely to be of interest.
Members are asked to show their support for the club through reasonably regular attendance at meetings and other events; by willingness to serve on the Committee if nominated (this entails having an email address); and by giving at least one talk, drawing on either their professional experiences or a topic of personal interest. Members are also expected to pay their subscription and other fees when due.
Subject to the prior approval of the Secretary a member may occasionally bring a guest to an ordinary meeting. A prospective member may attend as a guest at not more than two ordinary meetings in any one club year.
